Our principals

Milton C. Smith
After earning a Bachelor of Arts cum laude from the University of Virginia in 1959, Milt served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of Captain. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia Law School in 1965, and following that, served as Assistant Washington State Attorney General and Chief Deputy Washington State Insurance Commissioner.

Milt was a founder and principal at Carney Badley Smith & Spellman, where he worked from 1972 until 2002. He left to join the formation of Smith McKenzie Rothwell & Barlow, where he practiced until 2007, when he and his son Mark co-founded the Smith Law Partnership LLP.

Milt focuses his practice in estate planning, probate contracts and corporate law. He is a member of the American College of Trusts and Estate Counsel, a former president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club (1995 to 1996) and a member of the Board of Directors of Manson Construction Co. In 2007 and 2008 Milt was selected as a “Super Lawyer” in Estate Planning and Probate, an honor recorded by Super Lawyers magazine from among the top five percent of attorneys in each state, as chosen by their peers and through the independent research of Law & Politics.

Mark E. Smith
Mark received his Bachelor’s degree in marketing from Pacific Lutheran University in 1988. He also studied international business at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark in 1986. After earning his Bachelor’s degree, Mark worked as an industrial engineer for the Boeing Company, imported jewelry from Poland and worked as a commercial crab fisherman in Alaska. In fact, Mark worked aboard the F/V North American, which is now featured on Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch.” In the late 1990s, Mark enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1999. During law school, he served as a clerk for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Mark began his practice with Carney Badley Smith & Spellman in 2001 then practiced at Smith McKenzie Rothwell & Barlow. He left in 2007, become founding co-partner with his father, Milt Smith, in the Smith Law Partnership LLP.
Mark focuses his practice on contracts, corporate law, collections, estate planning and probate and personal injury law. He is admitted to practice in Washington and California and is a member of the Washington State Trial Lawyers Association.
